"The New Medicine Show" broadcasts every Thursday morning from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. (except the fourth Thursday each month) on KKUP 91.5 FM. Join us for an hour of conversation about health issues, the latest scientific studies, and what you can do for your health.

8/5/10     Biology & Behavior: Girls & Boys, Men & Women
There is much that's the same between girls and boys, men and women: over 99% of our DNA is the same. But the difference of less than 1% adds up to a lot. In today's show we explore the differences in our brains, neurotransmitters, and hormones to discover the biological basis of our behaviors. And, since behaviors can function to maintain or increase these differences, we also explore whether or not who we think we are is set in stone. Have you ever been unable to figure out why your mate, your boss, your family members, or even your children are the way they are? This show may help you understand just what it is that separates the girls from the boys and the women from the men.

(For additional information on the brain's influences on our behavior, consider the following books: The Female Brain and The Male Brain by Louann Brizendine, MD. John Gray, PhD offers relationship strategies for improving both hormonal profiles and relationships in Venus on Fire Mars on Ice. For courses that offer insight into these differences and teach how to work with them, I suggest PAX Programs Incorporated.)

8/5/10     Minerals & Microbes: Small Things That Make a Big Difference
Minerals and microbes are mostly too small to see. Yet both are ubiquitous and vital to our health. Without them life as we know it wouldn't exist. In today's show we'll explore our dependency on minerals and how we compete for these precious nutrients with the microbes in, on, and around us. We'll also examine genetics and how information and traits can move from one organism to the other. We'll discover that there's much we have in common with our smallest and closest neighbors, both friend and foe, despite our great differences.

6/10/10     Grains: Could Whole Grains Be Bad For Your Health?
We've been told for decades by progressive nutritionists that whole grains are good for us, certainly better than refined grains. Even the USDA and European Food Council recommend whole grains for reducing the risk of heart disease and cancer. But is eating whole grains really as good as they say? Join us as we speak with Rami Nagel, an internationally published writer and author of Cure Tooth Decay and Healing Our Chilren, who gives the straight science about eating grains for optimal health.

5/13/10     Fat: What's Really Good For You?
Butter is bad for your heart, right? Not any more! The latest research shows that saturated animal fats are actually beneficial for heart health. Join us as we discuss animal fats and essential omega fats, what we need and why we need it. Discover what we do and don't have in common with our fellow primates, and be surprised by how much fat cows are eating while they graze. Learn why giving in to your cravings for cream, butter, eggs, and other rich foods will help you lose weight and live longer and healthier!

3/11/10     Food, Farms, & Children's Health - Interview with Life Earth Farm Discovery Program and the Community Alliance with Family Farmers
Is eating fruits and vegetables enough to keep us healthy? Is eating more organic foods enough to reverse the growing epidemic of childhood obesity? Join us as we discuss an often overlooked link between food and children's health: farms. Jessica Ridgeway from the Live Earth Farm Discovery Program and Kathryn Spencer from the Community Alliance with Family Farms discuss the broad and intricate relationships between school lunches, getting children to eat more vegetables, education, children's health, and farms. Also featured is toe-tapping music for children from the local award-winning Banana Slug String Band.

2/11/10     Fresh Milk - Interview with Claravale Dairy
Milk: it does a body good... or does it? It's reputed as one of the most important and nutritious foods, especially for children and women. Yet there is also a lot of information that shows milk may be associated with numerous health issues, such as digestive difficulties, asthma, allergies, and skin problems. In this interview with local producer Claravale Dairy, owners Ron Garthwaite and Collette Cassidy discuss milk production and explore why not all milks are equal. We are also joined by Christina Hildebrand, owner of Real Food Bay Area CSA, which distributes Claravale Dairy products throughout the Bay Area. Join us to learn more about how milk is produced, why glass bottles are advantageous, and how to get the best quality milk for you and your family.

8/20/09     Suicide By Sugar - Interview with Nancy Appleton, PhD
"It is a dangerous, addictive white powder that can be found in abundance throughout this country..." In her newly published book, Suicide By Sugar, Nancy Appleton, PhD shares about her addiction to sugar and the ailments she suffered as a result. As her research and studies show, her experience is not unique. The medical community is beginning to question whether sugar is as harmless as they thought, and Nancy's book is full of scientific research that supports the growing suspicion. Do you have a sweet tooth or suffer from a sugar addiction? Join us as we discuss the addictive nature of sugar, its ability to suppress the immune system, impair digestion, promote heart disease, and more.

8/13/09     American Association of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine & HR 646
While universal health care is taking center stage in the news, integrative medicine continues to be a quiet, patient-driven phenomenon. As such, many worry that under a universal health clare plan they will lose their freedom to choose what kind of care they receive. Acupuncture, largely paid for out-of-pocket, is one such modality that could play an important role in universal health care. Now it is taking its own center stage in the form of HR 646, a piece of legislation which would make acupuncture available to persons insured under Part B of Medicare as well as to federal employees. Joining me to discuss this piece of legislation and the impact acupuncture and Oriental medicine can have in American health care are Rebekah Christensen and Jolene Habeck of the American Association of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (AAAOM). For over 20 years the AAAOM has worked to enhance public health by promoting excellence and integrity within the Oriental medicine profession. They are currently raising both funds and awareness for HR 646, which will make acupuncture easily accessible to 54 million Americans. To learn more about the AAAOM, HR 646, or to donate or take other action, please visit the AAAOM website.

7/9/09     Applied Lightweight Functional (ALF) Dental Appliance - Interview with Dr. Mamta Shah, DDS and Dr. Patricia Weltz, DO
On their own crowded teeth may be problematic. Often they may also indicate that there are problems elsewhere in the body. For example, do you have headaches or TMJ pain? Do you grind your teeth at night or have sleep apnea? What about back pain? These and other conditions may be due to restrictions in the bones that form the mouth and head. The restrictions that cause teeth to crowd can also impact the rest of the skeleton and cause a myriad of difficulties. In this hour we discuss how these restrictions develop, and the various options for improving smiles while reducing pain and discomfort. We discuss the advantages and disadvantages of braces, Invisalign, the ALF and other appliances, and explore relationships between the mouth, head, and rest of the body. Dr. Shah and Dr. Weltz discuss how dentistry and osteopathy are complementary, and describe how they collaborate to improve their patient's smile and overall health.
